THE DONGO KUNDU BYPASS is also known as the Mombasa Southern Bypass Highway.
It is a proposed road and bridge project (that is poised to create ease of access to and from South Coast).

It will connect the Mombasa Mainland West to the Mombasa Mainland South without entering the Mombasa Island. It is contained in the 2004 government masterplan aimed at opening up the South Coast and increasing tourist visits to the area by improving the road network.

The highway starts at Miritini and loops around the western edge of Mombasa International Airport, joins the Mwache creek through the Port Reiz bay and ending at Ng’ombeni.
The entire bypass highway measures approximately 17.5km from Miritini to Ng’ombeni and is poised to decongest the caostal city of Mombasa, since the highway will provide an alternative route to the Likoni channel.

This is an important transport corridor for traffic from and to Tanzania, thereby automatically easing traffic pressure on the ferry. It will further open up South Coast to tourism and agriculture and will also be an economic and regional production hub.

The project is expected to positively and directly impact over 600,000 in Mombasa, Likoni, Changamwe and Ukunda areas combined.

The Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone Area;
will be a free trade-zone area;
-with 6,200 sites
-with the ability to accommodate 10,000 business units

The development of the Zone will also include the establishment of a free port, a logistics hub and an industrial zone.
The aim of this vision is; to raise the standard of the Mombasa Free Trade Zone to that of the Zone in Dubai.

The project will be constructed in 3 phases;
a) Miritini – Kipevu Link Road (This will be a dual carriage-way standards road – 10km. It will largely serve the port, to evacuate/bring cargo to the port) This phase will greatly reduce the serious congestion currently being experienced between Jomvu and Bonje.
b) Mwache – Dongo Kundu
c) Dongo Kundu – Kibundani

Benefits of the Dongo Kundu Bypass:
a) Improve cargo delivery into and out of the Mombasa port
b) It will ease the rampant congestion at the Likoni channel
c) It will connect Kenya to Tanzania through the Mombasa LungaLunga road
d) It will have 6,200 sites
e) It will accommodate 10,000 business units and facilities for warehousing, light industry and processing
The coast of Kenya is located along the Indian Ocean. It was (formerly) one of Kenya's eight provinces.
It comprises the Indian Ocean coastal strip with the capital city at Mombasa and was inhabited by the Mijikenda and Swahili, among others.
The other towns along the coastal strip include Diani in the South, and Kilifi, Malindi, Watamu and Lamu in the North.

The Coast region consists of 6 counties and was ranked second overall in regional (Kenyan) performance with an average of 56.3%.
Four of the counties; Kwale, TaitaTaveta, Mombasa and Kilifi were ranked in the top twenty.

The 6 Counties are: Kwale County
